Spring Queen Trapping: We’re Proud to Help Protect Jersey’s Wildlife

1 April 2026

This week, our very own Matthew Godden handed over 800 Asian Hornet trap tags to Adam Dallas-Chapman from the Jersey Asian Hornet Group, as part of our sponsorship of their spring queen trapping programme.

Why is this programme so important?

Asian hornets are aggressive hunters of honeybees. Even a handful hovering outside a hive can devastate a colony. And when bee populations suffer, the effects ripple right through our ecosystem as they are essential pollinators for local crops and plants.

It’s not just bees at risk either. Asian hornets prey on native insects, butterflies and invertebrates, disrupting Jersey’s natural balance and reducing food sources for birds and other wildlife.

That’s why catching queens early in spring is so critical. Once a nest is established, it can be protected by over 500 worker hornets making removal dangerous and requiring specialist teams. By targeting queens before they build, each trap could prevent hundreds of hornets from ever taking hold.

We’re proud to play our small part in protecting Jersey’s precious wildlife and environment.
