A Landmark Moment for End-of-Life Choice in Jersey

6 March 2026

Lawmakers in Jersey have approved landmark legislation that will allow terminally ill adults the right to choose to end their own lives. This decision marks the final stage of the Island’s
legislative process, with the proposals now awaiting Royal Assent in the UK. Once granted, the first legal assisted deaths could take place as early as next summer.

Under the new law, eligibility will apply to adults diagnosed with a terminal illness who are experiencing unbearable suffering and are expected to die within six months. For individuals with neurodegenerative conditions — such as Parkinson’s disease or Motor neurone disease — the timeframe extends to 12 months.

With this historic vote, Jersey becomes the second jurisdiction in the British Isles to fully approve assisted dying, following the Isle of Man.

This marks a significant and deeply personal step in the ongoing conversation around dignity, compassion and individual choice at the end of life.
